Find an Exit From a Platform – Bank
Overview
There is stairs-only access between the Bank Concourse and street level, though there is lift access between the Northern Line Concourse and street level. There are automatic lifts between the Northern Line Concourse and Intermediate Level then a further lift between the Intermediate Level and the DLR platforms.
Note that although the announcements in the lifts refer to the Intermediate Level as the Northern Line Level, there are 21 steps between this level and the Northern Line platforms.
The directions in this section are limited to routes to exits from the Bank Concourse, directly from the Waterloo & City Line and from other platforms via the Central Line and Northern Line concourses, plus the lift access route from the DLR platforms to King William Street. See the Environs page for details of the exits from this station.
Note that the Northern Line Concourse is closed at weekends and after 21:00 during the week. If you need lift access through the station whilst the Northern Line Concourse is closed, we suggest you arange this before you get on your train.
The routes to/from the Circle/District Line platforms of Monument Station are included in the Change Platforms section.
There’s tactile paving along the edge of the Central Line, DLR and Waterloo & City Line platforms, but none on the Northern Line platforms.
As you face the front of the train, the doors will open:
- Central Line, right
- Northern Line, left
- DLR Platform 10, right
- Waterloo & City, Platform 7, left
- Waterloo & City, Platform 8, right
Note that DLR platform 10 was signed Alighting Only at the time of our survey, so we presume platform 9 is for departing trains.
From Which Platform?
From the Central Line, Platforms 5 – 6 From the Northern Line, Platforms 3 – 4 From the DLR, Platforms 9 – 10 From the Waterloo & City Line, Platforms 7 – 8 |
From the Central Line, Platforms 5 – 6
As you go from the front of westbound (rear of eastbound) trains, the first two gaps are the access to/from the escalators to the Central Line Concourse, the next gap is the west entrance from the Intermediate Level, whilst the fourth gap is the exit to the Intermediate Level.
As you go from the rear of westbound (front of eastbound ) trains, the first gap is the east entrance from the Intermediate Level, the next two turnings are simply gaps between platforms, whilst the fourth gap is the exit to the Intermediate Level. Beyond this is the west entrance from the Intermediate Level followed by the two gaps to/from the escalators to the Central Line Concourse.
To the Central Line Concourse
From platform 5, westbound, ideally go into the second gap from the front of the train, cross the central reservation then turn left towards the escalators.
From the eastbound, platform 6, ideally go into the gap nearest the rear of the train then turn right towards the escalators.
The right-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to the Central Line Concourse. The main gate line is in front of you with a Wide Aisle exit at the right-hand end and automatic exits to your left of this. You can go through these gates, turn right and go up two steps into the Bank Concourse.
Alternatively, you can turn right at the top of the escalators, there’s a gate line in front of you with a Wide Aisle exit at the left-hand end and automatic exits to your right of this. Go through the gates into the Bank Concourse.
To the Northern Line Concourse
Ideally, go into the fourth gap from either end of the train then turn right from platform 5, westbound (left from platform 6, eastbound). Go down two flights of steps, curving clockwise then down a straight flight to the Intermediate Level. Turn left then take the turning left towards the escalators.
The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to the Northern Line Concourse then turn left. The gate line is in front of you. At the time of our survey there were automatic exit gates at each end of the gate line, but no Wide Aisle gates. Go through the gates and continue to the exits.
From the Northern Line, Platforms 3 – 4
The steps to the Intermediate Level are beyond the rear of southbound trains on platform 3 (beyond the front of northbound trains on platform 4).
We understand you’re asked to keep left, go up a flight of steps into the Intermediate Level
To the Central Line Concourse
Take the first turning left, continue past the lift on your left then take the turning right.
Continue past the passage to the Waterloo & City Line, to your left then take the next turning left, up the steps to the Central Line platforms. You go up a straight flight of steps then up two flights, curving anti-clockwise to platform level. You may as well turn right here, continue onto platform 6, eastbound then turn left. Take the second turning left then turn right towards the escalators.
Via the Escalators
Take the first turning left, continue past the lift on your left then take the turning right.
Continue past the passage to the Waterloo & City Line, to your left and the entrance to the Northern Line to your right then follow the passage to your right to the foot of the escalators.
The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to the Northern Line Concourse then turn left. The gate line is in front of you. At the time of our survey there were automatic exit gates at each end of the gate line, but no Wide Aisle gates. Go through the gates and continue to the exits.
Via the Lifts
You may as well take the first turning right. Each lift is at the end of a short passage leading to your right. Unfortunately, at the time of our survey, there was little visual and no audio indication as to which of these four lifts is next to arrive.
Go up to the Northern Line Concourse, leave via the other door then turn right and right again towards the gate line. The gate line is in front of you. At the time of our survey there were automatic exit gates at each end of the gate line, but no Wide Aisle gates. Go through the gates and continue to the exits.
From the DLR, Platforms 9 – 10
As platform 10 was signed “Alighting Only” at the time of our survey, we presume you’ll arrive on this platform. The exit towards either concourse of Bank Station is beside the front of the train, whilst that for Monument Station is towards the rear, see the Change Platforms page for details of leaving via that exit.
Go through the gap nearest the front of the train, into the central reservation and turn left. The escalators, with central steps to the Intermediate Level, are in front of you, whilst the lift is at the end of a passage to your right of the escalators.
We assume that, if you need to use the lift, you’ll go all the way, to the Northern Line Concourse and then to King William Street.
To the Intermediate Level, Via Escalator or Steps
The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to the Intermediate Level. Alternatively, you can go up 14, 3 x 15 then 14 steps.
Via the Central Line Concourse
Continue past the passage to the Waterloo & City Line, to your left then take the next turning left, up the steps to the Central Line platforms. You go up a straight flight of steps then up two flights, curving anti-clockwise to platform level. You may as well turn right here, continue onto platform 6, eastbound then turn left. Take the second turning left then turn right towards the escalators.
Via the Northern Line Concourse
Continue past the passage to the Waterloo & City Line, to your left and the entrance to the Northern Line to your right then follow the passage to your right to the foot of the escalators.
The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to the Northern Line Concourse then turn left. The gate line is in front of you. At the time of our survey there were automatic exit gates at each end of the gate line, but no Wide Aisle gates. Go through the gates and continue to the exits.
Via the Lifts
Continue to the end of the passage, the lift to the Intermediate Level is in front of you with the call button to your left of the door. Go up to the Intermediate level, leave via the other door then turn right.
It may be easier, from here to take the first turning right then take the turning left towards the automatic lifts. Note that there is no audio and little visual indication of which of the four lifts is the next to arrive. Go up to the Northern Line Concourse, leave via the other door and turn right.
You’re inside the gates. From here, you could continue to the gate line on your right, the automatic exits are the nearest to you, but there is stairs-only access between the Bank Concourse and street level.
For the lift to street level, take the turning left, pass the emergency exit to your left then find the door to the lift beyond this, there’s an Oyster card reader opposite the door. The call button is to your left of the door, go up to street level and leave via the same door, onto King William Street.
From the Waterloo & City Line, Platforms 7 – 8
The exit is beyond the front of the train on either platform. The passage leading away from the right-hand side of platform 7 (doors opened on your left) leads to the Intermediate Level, there are automatic exit gates to your left of this. As you arrive on platform 8 (doors opened on your right) there are automatic entrance gates from the left-hand end of the gate line and automatic exits to your right of these. There’s a gap between these exits and the ones opposite the end of platform 7.
Go through the gates then up a flight of steps. There’s a long passage in front of you with travellators towards the left and the walkway along the right-hand side.
Via the Travellator
The right-hand travellator is normally the one you need. Continue to the end of the passage.
