If you're happy with stairs access, we suggest that it's easier to locate the bridges or ramp to the concourse towards the north end of the station. These give access to the other platforms.

Services towards Blackpool will usually come into platform 1, whilst eastbound Trans-Pennine services will usually come in on platform 2. The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train.
Go beyond the front of the train (platform1), or rear )platform 2) and continue past the end of the building in the middle of the platform to the steps to the west bridge. Go up two flights of steps, turn right, go up three steps and continue, down a flight of steps onto the ramp from the concourse.
Turn right down the ramp. The facilities building is in front of you with platform 3 to your right, platform 4 to your left. The long trains which serve these platforms usually extend beyond the bridge, to the north and the lift to the south.
Continue across the ramp, up a flight of steps onto the east bridge. Take the first turning right for platforms 5 - 6, go down two flights of steps onto the platform. Platform 5 is to your right, platform 6 to your left.
Take the second turning on your right and go down two flights of steps onto the platform. The track is to your right, whilst the wall of the station building is to your left.
Go beyond the rear of the train (platform 1, or front for platform 2), beyond the building in the middle of the platform and locate the steps down to the north subway. Go down a flight of steps and turn left.
Take the first turning left, go up the first slope then turn left (180 degrees and continue to platform level. Platform 3 is to your right, platform 4 to your left. Note that the long trains serving these platforms usually extend beyond the bridge, to the north and the lift to the south.
Take the second turning left and continue, up the slope to platform level. Platform 5 is to your left, platform 6 to your right.
Follow the right-hand side of the subway to the end then turn left, up the ramp to platform 7. The track is to your left and the subway entrance to your right.
If you need lift access, go beyond the rear of the train (platform 1, or front on platform 2). Continue, beyond the end of the building and the stairwell for the north subway. The lift building is beyond the stairwell, a rail extends a few metres beyond this on platform 1. Use the lift to descend to the south subway and turn left.
Use the lift on your right to ascend to platform level, platform 4 is to your right, whilst you'll need to go round the end of the administration building to your left to reach platform 3.
Use the lift on your left to ascend to platform level, platform 5 is to your right, platform 6 to your left.
Continue to the end of the passage. The lift to platform 7 and way out is at the end of the passage, facing you. Go up to platform level, the track is in front of you.
This island platform contains the mainline platforms 3 - 4 and two bay platforms, 3C and 4C at the south end.
The mainline, northbound services, towards Carlisle and Glasgow will usually stop at platform 3, whilst southbound services, towards Crewe and London will usually stop at platform 4. The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train.
Note that the long trains serving these platforms can extend north of the ramp to the bridge and south of the lift.
At the time of writing, we're not sure which services use the bay platforms, however, the end of these is just south of the administration building. In the context of the following instructions, you'd continue, beside the administration building on platform 4 to locate the lift, the ramp to the north subway descends from a point north of the administration building, whilst the ramp to the concourse, rises from the middle of the platform, north of the facilities building.
Get off the train and locate the foot of the ramp, which is north of the facilities building. You may recognise this as containing the bar and Upper Crust, from which seating extends between two glass partitions, onto each platform. Go up the ramp.
Locate the steps to the west bridge, to your left, then go up a flight of steps onto the bridge. Continue, down three steps then turn left and go down two flights of steps to platform level. Platform 1 is to your right, platform 2 to your left. We suggest you continue to the building to be beside the short trains which usually serve these platforms.
Locate the steps to the east bridge to your right then go up a flight of steps onto the bridge. Take the first turning right and go down two flights of steps onto platforms 5 - 6, platform 5 is to your right, platform 6 to your left.
Take the second turning right and go down two flights of steps to platform level. the track is to your right, whilst the wall of the station building is to your left.
Get off the train and locate the top of the ramp, which leaves from the middle of the island platform between the two buildings. Go down the first slope, turn right (180 degrees) then go down the second slope, into the subway.
Turn right then take the turning right, up a flight of steps to platform level. Platform 2 is to your right, platform 1 to your left. We suggest you continue to the building to be beside the short trains which usually serve these platforms.
Turn left and take the first turning left and go up the ramp to platform level. Platform 5 is to your left, platform 6 to your right.
Turn left, follow the right-hand side till you reach the end, then turn left, up the ramp onto platform 7. The track is to your left, and the subway entrance to your right.
If you need lift access, locate the lift building, which is on platform 4, beside the administration building. Use the lift to descend to the south subway
Turn left and use the lift on your right to go to platform level. Note that the subway extends beyond this lift into areas not for public use. At platform level, platform 1 is to your right, platform 2 to your left. There's a rail to your right, which extends a few metres south of the lift. We suggest you turn back (180 degrees, north) and go to the building to be beside the short trains which usually serve these platforms.
Turn right and use the lift on your left to go to platform level, platform 5 is to your right, platform 6 to your left.
Tturn right from the lift and continue to the end of the passage. The lift to platform 7 and way out is at the end of the passage, facing you. Go up to platform level, the track is in front of you.
Note that this island platform is shorter than platforms 1 - 4. Southbound services, towards Manchester, will usually stop at platform 6, whilst northbound services, will usually stop at platform 5. The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train.

Turn left, continue down a flight of steps onto the ramp from the concourse then turn left and go down to platform level. Platform 3 is to your right, platform 4 to your left. Note that the long trains which usually serve these platforms extend beyond the bridge, to the north and the lift to the south.
Turn right then take the turning right and go down two flights of steps to platform level. The track is to your right, whilst the wall of the station building is to your left.
The ramp to the north subway goes down (south) from the middle of the island platform, though there are no buildings on this platform to help you find it. You may be able to distinguish the railings beside the ramp on each platform, amongst the various pillars, seats and flower beds. Go down the ramp.
Turn right and take the second turning right and go up a flight of steps to platform level, platform 1 is to your left, platform 2 to your right. We suggest you continue to the building in front of you to be beside the short trains which usually serve these platforms.
Turn right, take the first turning right and go up the ramp to the top of the first slope. turn left (180 degrees) then go up the ramp to platform level, platform 3 is to your right, platform 4 to your left. Note that the long trains which serve these platforms extend beyond the bridge, to the north and the lift to the south.
Turn left and follow the right-hand side of the passage till you reach the end. Turn left and go up the ramp to platform level. The track is to your left, whilst the subway entrance is to your right.

Turn left from the lift and continue to the end of the passage. The lift to platform 7 and way out is facing you. Go up to platform level, the track is in front of you.
At the time of writing, we're not sure which services use this platform, which runs along the east side of the station building. Note that it is possible to go beyond the steps to the bridge, though this area didn't appear to be regularly used at the time of our survey. There is, however, a vacant track bed to the east of the platform at this point.
Move towards the north of the train and locate the steps to the east bridge. Go up two flights of steps and turn left.
Continue, down a flight of steps, cross the ramp from the concourse and continue up a flight of steps onto the west bridge. Continue, down three steps before turning left and going down two flights of steps to platform level, platform 1 is to your right, platform 2 to your left. We suggest you continue to the building in front of you to be beside the short trains which usually serve these platforms.
Continue, down a flight of steps onto the ramp from the concourse, turn left and go down to platform level, platform 3 is to your right, platform 4 to your left. Note that the long trains serving these platforms extend beyond the bridge, to the north and the lift to the south.
Ttake the turning left and go down two flights of steps to platform level, platform 5 is to your right, platform 6 to your left.
The subway entrance is about in the middle of the platform, with the ramp going down south, beside the wall of the station building. Go into the subway and turn right.
Take the third turning right and go up a flight of steps to platform level, platform 1 is to your left, platform 2 to your right. We suggest you continue to the building to be beside the short trains which usually serve these platforms.
Take the second turning right, go up the first slope then turn left (180 degrees) and go up the slope to platform level, platform 3 is to your right, platform 4 to your left. Note that the long trains which serve these platforms extend beyond the bridge, to the north and the lift to the south.
Take the first turning right and go up the ramp to platform level, platform 5 is to your left, platform 6 to your right.
Locate the Lift, which is just north of the south entrance. Go to subway level and continue forward.
Use the second lift on your right to ascend to platform level. Note that the subway extends beyond this lift into areas not for public use. We suggest you go back (180 degrees) to the building to be beside the short trains which usually serve these platforms.
