Location

This station is located on the viaduct, carrying trains from Charing Cross, which runs parallel to Mepham Street. See the Environs page of our guide to Waterloo Mainline Station for more details.

The foot bridge, which joins this station to Waterloo Mainline Station, crosses Station Approach and Mepham Street, a few metres northwest of Sandell Street, whilst a subway at the southeast end of the station gives direct access to Southwark Underground Station.

Entrances and Exits

There are three entrances/exits to this station:

Via the Foot Bridge from Waterloo Mainline Station

To the Foot Bridge

You leave the mainline concourse going northeast from a point southeast of exit 3, between Burger King and the Reef Bar. There are two escalators between the two sets of steps, the left-hand escalator and steps are normally the ones you need. The door to the lift is to your right of the right-hand steps.

If you use the stairs, you go up 3 x 12 steps, going northeast. There’s a blank door on your left at the top and an entrance to the Medicentre at the end of a short passage to your right. The door to the lift is on the right-hand (southwest) side of this passage.

The Foot Bridge

Customers are asked to keep left.

You cross Station Approach, the passage then veers right (east) across Mepham Street.

You go through a normally open barrier which can close this route to the mainline station, before passing the way out to Waterloo Road, Union Jack Club and Imperial War Museum, to your right. This exit is closed after 23:15.

You go down a slope, then through normally open gates which can close Waterloo East Station, then across tactile paving, before turning left into the concourse.

Via Steps from Sandell Street

Note there are 79 steps between street level and the foot bridge. This route is closed after 23:15.

From the northwest side of Sandell Street, a few metres northeast of the junction with Waterloo Road/Mepham Street, you go up one step, going northwest, turn left (west then right (north), cross tactile paving then go up 16 steps, going north. Turn right (180 degrees, south) then go up 16 steps, going south. Turn right (180 degrees, north) then go up 13 steps, going north. Turn right (180 degrees, south) then go up five steps, going south. Turn right (180 degrees, north) then go up 14 steps, going north. turn right (180 degrees, south) then go up 14 steps, going south. Turn right (west) then right again (north) and continue (south) along a short passage till you reach the foot bridge, turn right (east) towards the station concourse.

Via the Subway to/from Southwark Underground Station

This subway leads northeast from the entrance to Southwark Underground Station, under the southeast ends of all platforms. There is stairs-only access between the subway and platforms.
