There are eight sets of stairs within the building which are available to the public, two between the Lower Ground and Ground floors, and six between the Ground and First floors.
We'll call the stairs in the east half of the building the Lower East Stairs, whilst those from the west, will be named the Lower West Stairs.
There are three sets of stairs in each half of the building. Those leaving from the North Foyer will be called the Northeast and Northwest Stairs, those leaving from the South Foyer will be called the Southeast and Southwest Stairs, whilst those leaving from the courts will be called the East and West Stairs.
These rise from a point outside the south entrance to the Shop, there's a strip of red lighting to each side of the foot of the steps. You go up 14 then 10 steps, going south to the Ground Floor.You're in the middle of five passages leading east from the Main Hall, facing Coffee at Kelvingrove.
There's a glass partition with an upper and lower hand rail to each side of the stairs.
These rise from a point outside the entrance to the toilets, there's a strip of blue lighting to each side of the foot of the steps. You go up 14 then 10 steps, going south to the Ground Floor. You're in the middle of five passages leading west from the Main Hall, facing the Mini-Museum.

From the east side of the North Foyer, go up 13 steps, going east onto a landing. A flight of steps leaves from the left-hand side of this landing, not for public use. Turn right and go up 15 then 13 steps, going south to First Floor Level. You're on the walkway with the entrance to the Study Centre to your right and Dutch Art to your left.
Note that there's no hand rail on the lower flight of steps and that the rail, which is on the left-hand side of the upper flights starts above the bottom step and finishes eight steps before the top.
Note, also, that there's a level platform running to each side of the lower flight and it's possible to walk onto this with no rail between you and the steps.
On the left-hand (north) wall of the lower flight is a painting, North Corridor.
From the east side of the East Court, go up 23 steps, going east, onto a landing from where you can either turn right (south) or left (north) and go up a further 17 steps to First Floor level, into either the southeast or northeast corner of the walkway.
From the east side of the South Foyer, go up 13 steps, going east onto a landing. There's a double hand rail in the middle of this flight of steps. ON the right-hand (south) wall, you pass paintings:
Turn left (north) and go up 15 then 13 steps to First Floor Level,. You're on the walkway, just west of the entrance to Scottish Identity in Art. Note that the hand rail, on the left-hand side of these steps starts above the bottom step and finishes eight steps before the top.
From the west side of the North Foyer, go up 13 steps, going west, onto a landing with a blank door to your right (north). There's a double central rail up this flight of steps.
Turn left from the landing and go up 14 then 15 steps, going south to First Floor level. There's a hand rail to your left as you go up these flights of steps. You're on the walkway with the entrance to the Study Centre to your left and Cultural Survival to your right.
Beside the north side of the first flight of steps is a painting, Reading Aloud, by Albert Moore.
From the west side of the West Court, go up 23 steps going west, onto a landing from here you can either turn left (south) or right (north) and go up a further 17 steps to First Floor level, into either the northwest or northeast corners of the walkway.
From the west side of the South Foyer, go up 13 steps, going west to a landing.
On the south wall of this landing are two paintings:
There's a window in the wall on the west side of this landing.
Turn right (north), go up 15 then 13 steps, going north to First Floor level. The entrance to Scotland's First People is to your left.
There's a hand rail to your right as you climb the stairs.
On the west wall of this staircase is a large painting of Queen Victoria's visit to Glasgow 1890.
