This is a through station on the Bakerloo, Circle, Hammersmith & City, Jubilee and Metropolitan lines; though some Metropolitan line trains terminate here.

Layout

This is a very complex station. A member of staff told me that it was built in four phases with no regard to consistency of design.

There are ten platforms, which will be considered as belonging to 3 groups:

• 1 – 4, Metropolitan;
• 5 - 6, Circle and Hammersmith & City;
• 7 – 10, Bakerloo and Jubilee.

Platforms 1 – 4 (numbered west to east) run north from the station on two islands, containing 1 – 2 and 3 – 4.

Platforms 1 and 4 are termini for the Metropolitan line, whilst the tracks through platform 2 (northbound) and 3 (eastbound) join the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines to the east of the station.

Platforms 5 – 6 run approximately east/west through the station. Platform 5 is eastbound (towards Kings Cross), whilst platform 6 (lying south of platform 5) is westbound (towards Paddington).

Platforms 7 – 10 run east/west through the station, the southbound, 7 and 8 share an island which runs below the northbound island, platforms 9 and 10. Platforms 7 and 10 lie to the north of 8 and 9.

These platforms are designated:

• 7, southbound Jubilee;
• 8 southbound Bakerloo;
• 9, northbound Bakerloo;
• 10, northbound Jubilee.

The station is established on six levels:

• The Bakerloo Line concourse is at street level, being directly accessed via the Baker Street north and south entrances.
• The Metropolitan Line concourse lies below street level, this is accessed via stairs from the Madame Tussauds entrance, or from the Bakerloo Line concourse.
• The Metropolitan and Circle line, platforms 1 - 6 are reached via stairs from the Metropolitan Line concourse, or from the Marylebone Road South entrance.
• The lower concourse can be reached via escalators from the Bakerloo Line concourse, or via stairs from the Metropolitan Line platforms 1 - 4.
• The Northbound Bakerloo and Jubilee lines, platforms 9 - 10 are reached via escalators from the lower concourse.
• The southbound Jubilee and Bakerloo Lines, platforms 7 - 8 can be reached via escalators from the lower concourse, or via stairs from the northbound platforms.

The Bakerloo Line concourse is in the northeast corner of the junction with Baker Street and Marylebone Road, whilst the Metropolitan Line concourse lies east of this, north of the forecourt.

Platforms 1 - 4 lead north from the Metropolitan Line concourse, whilst platforms 5 - 6 lie to the south.

The lower concourse lies under platforms 1 - 4, bridging the Bakerloo (platforms 8 - 9, whilst the Jubilee Line (platforms 7 and 10) lie north of this.

Accessibility

The Metropolitan Line concourse is accessed via

• stairs from the Madame Tussauds entrance,
• stairs from the upper concourse or
• The Marylebone Road South entrance, which is via the bridge over platforms 5 and 6.

The Metropolitan Line concourse gives stairs only access to the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, plus the lower concourse. There is, however, escalator only access between the lower concourse and Bakerloo/Jubilee lines.

The Bakerloo Line concourse is accessed via:

• Level access from the Baker Street South and Baker Street North entrances and
• stairs from the Metropolitan Line concourse.

The Bakerloo Line concourse gives escalator only access to the lower concourse, from which there is escalator only access to the Bakerloo and Jubilee lines.

There is stairs access between all Bakerloo and Jubilee line platforms.

We therefore believe that this station is inaccessible to wheelchair users. Guide Dog users can, however, directly access the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, though they would need to have at least one escalator (between the lower concourse and platform level) turned off to reach the Bakerloo or Jubilee lines. They could change platforms between Bakerloo and Jubilee lines in either direction.
