FIND AN EXIT FROM A PLATFORM

Describe Online

Overview

Although you can leave via the main concourse at most times, the recommended exit route is via the exit concourse. From here you can leave to street level via exits 5 to 8, or go through the alternative gate line into the main concourse and to exits 1 to 4. See the Environs page for details of entrances and exits.

From Which Platform?

From the Central Line, Platforms 1 and 2
From the Bakerloo and Victoria Line, Platforms 3 - 6

From the Central Line, Platforms 1 and 2

There are three exits from this island platform. The one beyond the front of the train (westbound), rear (eastbound) leads to the exit section of the intermediate level, whilst the others lead you to the opposite side of the exit concourse.

For the Intermediate Level

Go to the front of the train (westbound), or rear (eastbound) and continue into a passage leading off the end of the platform. From the westbound, turn right then left into the passage from the eastbound platform. Continue up two flights of stairs, follow the passage right then up another flight of stairs to the intermediate level. The escalators to the exit concourse are on your right. Go up the escalator then go through the gates.

From the Other Exits

Move towards the middle of the train and locate one of the exits with stairs going up towards the front (westbound), rear (eastbound). Go up two flights of stairs before turning left, then right. If you have only one flight of steps and can only turn right, you've come up the entrance and may not be able to get back through the main concourse.

Continue, up the escalators to the exit concourse, then turn left at the top and go through the gates.

From the Bakerloo and Victoria Line, Platforms 3 - 6

Each of these platforms has four passages leading into the central reservation towards the south end. The very last passage on platform 6 and the end passages on platforms 3 to 5 are entrances from the Central Line.

>From the Southbound, Platforms 3 and 5

Go towards the front of the train and enter the central reservation and take the first turning right (from the Bakerloo), or left (from the Victoria Line). Follow the passage, up one flight of stairs then to your right, into the exit section of the intermediate level. The escalators to the exit concourse are on your left.

From the Northbound, Platforms 4 and 6

Go towards the rear of the train, enter the central reservation and take the first turning left (from the Bakerloo), or right (from the Victoria Line). Follow the passage, up one flight of stairs, then left into the exit section of the intermediate level. The escalators to the exit concourse are on your right (about 2 o'clock).

To Which Exit

At the top of the escalators, note that there are two pillars in the concourse between you and the gates.

For exit 5, go through the gates and follow the gate line to your right. The exit is to your left of the end of the gate line.

For exit 6, go through the gates and turn left, avoiding another pillar! The exit is in front of you at the end of the gate line.

for exits 7 and 8, go through the gates and bear left to locate a recess in the wall of the concourse. As you face into this recess, exit 7 is on your left, exit 8 is reached via a passage on your right.

For exits 1 - 4, it may be technically easier to leave via exit 5 and use the Pelican crossings. The one across East Oxford Street is a few metres to your left as you emerge from exit 5. Otherwise, from the escalator, turn left and follow the wall of the assistance booth round (almost 180 degrees in all) till you reach the gates to the main concourse. Go through the gates and continue down the slope to the end of the passage.

Exit 1 is on your right.

For exits 2 and 3, turn left and follow the wall of the concourse to locate the recess. As you face the recess, exit 2 is on your left, exit 3 on your right.

For exit 4,Continue forward, following the gate line to the far side of the concourse. Exit 4 will be in front of you as you reach the end of the gate line.
