This is a through station on the Bakerloo, Jubilee and Northern Line (Charing Cross Branch). The Waterloo & City Line is an integral part of Waterloo Mainline Station, however, there is an entrance and exit to this line within the Underground station. Although routes to/from the Waterloo & City Line via these will be mentioned in this guide, details of the platforms and the interface to the mainline station will be given in that guide.
This is a large, complex station which is established on six levels:
This is an island platform running approximately east/west with platform 5, westbound lying south of platform 6, eastbound. Escalators near each end of this platform connect to the intermediate level, whilst a lift near the middle gives step-free access to the intermediate and concourse levels.
This is an island platform running approximately northwest/southeast with platform 1, northbound lying southwest of platform 2, southbound. There is stairs-only access between this island platform and the intermediate level.
This is a single platform which curves so as to form part of the curve between Embankment Station north of west and Lambeth North, to the south. There is stairs-only access between this platform and the intermediate level.
This complex level contains the intermediate level concourse, the Jubilee Line interchange, the Bakerloo Line southbound platform 4 and the interconnecting passages between these areas.
This is a rectangular space, running approximately northwest/southeast between the foot of the escalators from the Underground and Shell Centre concourses. The southbound Bakerloo Line platform 4 lies southwest of this, with the northbound platform 3 at a lower level and offset a few metres to the southwest. The Northern Line platforms lie northeast of this concourse, at a lower level.
This is the rectangular space running approximately east/west between the top of the escalators towards each end of the island platform. The entrance and exit to/from the Jubilee Line concourse are on the south side of this space, whilst the entrance and exit towards the intermediate level concourse are on the north. There is escalator and lift access between here and concourse level.
This is a single platform which forms part of the curve between Embankment Station, north of west and Lambeth North to the south. There is stairs-only access between here and the northbound platform 3.
These passages link the intermediate level concourse to the Jubilee Line interchange, to the east, see the detailed description of the intermediate level for more information. The principal route to the Jubilee Line leaves northeast near the foot of the escalator from the Shell Centre concourse, whilst the exit route reaches the intermediate level concourse via the second passage on the northeast side from the foot of the escalators from the Underground concourse.
This level includes the Underground and Jubilee Line concourses.
This is the irregular shaped space at the foot of the escalators and steps from the mainline concourse. Although named "Main Concourse" on the plans supplied to us by London Underground, we're calling this the Underground concourse in the hope that it would not be confused with the mainline concourse, which is part of Waterloo Mainline Station.
The escvalators and steps from the mainline concourse arrive in the southeast side of this area, the entrance to the Waterloo & City Line is on the southwest side, whilst the exit arrives in the northeast side, beside the foot of the escalators. The ticket sales facilities are on the left-hand (southwest) side of this space, through which a clockwise traffic flow is encouraged.
A complex gate line separates the ticket hall from the escalators to the intermediate level. The gates at the far left (southwest) end are exits from the Underground towards the Waterloo & City Line, which are closed outside peak hours. The entrance and manual gates are towards the middle of the gate line, whilst the exits are to the right-hand (northeast) end.
The area inside the gates is an irregular shaped space with the escalators to/from the intermediate level concourse at the left-hand (southwest) end and escalators towards the Jubilee Line at the right-hand (northeast). Note that the escalators to the intermediate level concourse run approximately east/west, whilst those towards the Jubilee Line run northwest/southeast between here and the interconnecting passages, see the detailed description of the intermediate level for more infromation.
This is part of the Waterloo Road (exit 2) of the mainline station. We distinguish this from the street level, where York Road and Station Approach are at a higher level than Waterloo Road.
This is a generally rectangular space running northwest from exit 2 of the mainline station. a clockwise flow of traffic is encouraged. The ticket sales facilities, entrance and manual gates are towards the left-hand (southwest) side, whilst the exits are on the right (northeast). The entrance and exit sections of the areas inside and outside the gates were separated by rope barriers at the time of our survey. The escalators to/from the Jubilee Line interchange and the lift are reached by passages leading north from the northwest side of this space.
Note, there is lift accessbetween this level and the mainline concourse, see the Lifts page of our guide to Waterloo Mainline Station for more information.
In terms of the Underground station, this consists of the Shell Centre and mainline concourses.
The escalators/steps between the mainline and Underground concourses are beside (northeast of) the beginning of platform 18, see the description of the mainline concourse in our guide to Waterloo Mainline Station for more information.
The Shell Centre concourse is on the northwest side of York Road, opposite the mainline station, a short distance northeast of the London Eye. entrances in the southwest side and off York Road near the south corner of this rectangular building give access to the ticket sales facilities which are on the northwest side. There's a third, ticket-only entrance off York Road near the east corner. The steps and escalators to/from the intermediate level concourse leave from the southeast side of this space.
There is stairs-access between the Shell Centre concourse and the intermediate level. From here, there is stairs access to the Bakerloo and Northern lines, plus lift access to the Jubilee Line.
There is stairs access between the mainline and Underground concourses, but escalator-only access between the Underground concourse and the intermediate level.
There is lift access between the mainline and Jubilee Line concourses and thence to the Jubilee Line interchange and platform level. From the Jubilee Line interchange, there is stairs access to the Bakerloo and Northern Line platforms.
Note that the southbound Bakerloo Line platform 4 is at the intermediate level.
We therefore believe this station is accessible to Guide Dog users, whilst only the Jubilee and southbound Bakerloo lines are accessible to wheelchairs.
