Find an Exit From a Platform – London Bridge

Overview
The exits are divided into two groups, those from the main concourse and those from the Borough High Street concourses. There are distinct exits from each island platform towards each group. In particular, there’s a dedicated exit from the Northern Line to the main concourse.
The lifts in this station give direct access from the Jubilee Line to the main concourse, whilst the lift from the Northern Line takes you to the lower concourse at the Borough High Street exit. A further lift takes you from here to street level.
Although there are stairs-only routes between platforms, there is only escalator or lift access between the platforms and exits.

From the Jubilee Line, Platforms 3 and 4
The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train. There’s a barrier along the edge of each platform with doors which only open whilst a train is standing at the platform.
The entrances/exits are about in the middle of each platform, except that towards the lift which is at the rear of westbound (front of eastbound) trains.

Via the Lift to the Main Concourse
From the westbound, go to the rear of the train, enter the last passage, before the end of the platform and take the turning right.
From the eastbound, go to the front of the train, enter the last passage before the end of the platform and take the turning left.
Continue, along the passage, to the lift, in front of you and go up to concourse level. Leave the lift and continue, along the passage, into the concourse, the gate line is in front of you. There’s a manual gate at the right-hand end of the gate line and the automatic exits are next to this. Go through the gates.
From here, you can take a turning right into Joiner Street, from where you can turn left for level access to Duke Street Hill/Tooley Street or right towards St Thomas Street.
Via Escalators to the Main Concourse
The entrances/exits are about in the middle of the platform, go through one of the gaps into the central reservation and turn right (from the westbound) or left (from the eastbound).
Depending on where you came into the central reservation, you may pass the central steps, keep close to either side to avoid these and continue to the escalators. There are three escalators, the right-hand one is normally the one you need. Go up to the intermediate level, follow the passage which veers left, then go up the second set of escalators into the concourse.
The gate line is in front of you with a manual gate at the right-hand end and the automatic exit gates next to this. Go through the gates.
From here, you can turn right towards Joiner Street or continue forward towards the east exit onto Duke Street Hill, via four steps. The steps towards the Bus Station are immediately to your left of these steps.
Via Escalators to the Borough High Street Exits
The entrances/exits are about in the middle of the platform, go through one of the gaps into the central reservation and turn left (from the westbound) or right (from the eastbound).
Depending on where you came into the central reservation, you may pass the central steps, keep close to either side to avoid these and continue to the escalators. There are two escalators, the right-hand one is normally the one you need. Go up to the lower concourse and turn left. The gate line is in front of you with two manual gates at the left-hand end. At the time of our survey, we found no pattern for entrances and exits within the automatic gates. Go through the gates, continue to the far side of the concourse and turn right.
From here, you can go to street level either via escalators to the street level concourse or via steps to the Borough Market exit, on the west side of Borough High Street.
For the street level concourse, continue along the left-hand wall, then turn left (180 degrees) into the recess for the escalators, the left-hand one is normally the one you need. Go up to street level then turn left (180 degrees) and continue onto the east side of Borough High Street.
For the Borough Market exit, continue to the wall in front of you, turn left and go up three flights of steps to street level, Southwark Street is in front of you.
From the Northern Line, Platforms 1 and 2
The doors will open on your left as you face the front of the train. This is unusual for island platforms.
There is tactile paving along the edge of the platforms.
From here, you can go via two lifts to the Borough High Street exit, or via stairs and escalators to all exits.

Via Lift to the Borough High Street Exit
From the southbound, go to the front of the train, enter the last passage before the end of the platform and take the turning right.
From the northbound, go to the rear of the train, enter the last passage before the end of the platform and take the turning left.
Follow the passage to the end, the lift is in front of you. Go to lower concourse level.
Leave the lift via the other door and continue forward. The gate line is in front of you with a manual gate at the right-hand end and two manual gates at the left. At the time of our survey, there was no clear pattern to the direction of the automatic gates. Go through the gates and follow the left-hand wall to the end then turn left into the passage. The passage turns left, you pass a blank door before the door to the lift on your right. Go up to street level and leave via the same door, you’ll need to bear left before continuing forward onto the east side of Borough High Street.
Via Stairs and Escalators to the Main Concourse
The entrance/exit passages are about in the middle of the platform. Note there are fewer gaps from the northbound platform due to the central stairs. The preferred exit route is via the central stairs, though there is an alternative via the stairs at the end of the central reservation.
From the Southbound, go into the central reservation, preferably beside the rear half of the train, move to the far side of the central reservation and turn right.
From the northbound, enter the central reservation, preferably beside the front half of the train and turn left.
This should bring you to the foot of the central stairs, from either platform. If not, you’ll find the steps at the end of the reservation, which provide an alternative exit. If you go up eight steps to a landing, you’re on the central stairs, otherwise you’ll go up ten. Note that there are also eight steps down from the landing of the central stairs, in front of you, whereas there are a further ten steps up from the landing of the end stairs.
If you go up the central steps, as suggested, turn left and go up twelve steps, follow the passage then up the escalators into the exit area of the main concourse. Turn left at the top of the escalators,the gate line is in front of you with a manual gate at the left-hand end and all automatic gates should be exits. Go through the gates and continue forward, up eight steps to Duke Street Hill. Otherwise, you can turn right, go down five steps, take the turning left towards the Bus Station or continue forward into Joiner Street.
If you’ve missed the central stairs, continue, up the second flight of steps, take the first turning left and continue to the escalators in front of you.

From here, you can continue to the other side of the concourse and turn left towards the west exit onto Duke Street Hill, turn right, go down five steps then turn left for the Bus Station, or continue to Joiner Street.

This way, you’ll avoid going up the central steps by mistake.
